How to See Which MacBook I Have?

Knowing the model of your MacBook can be useful when you want to upgrade or access technical support. Fortunately, there is an easy way to determine which MacBook you have.

Identify your MacBook model

The About This Mac feature provides an easy way to identify the MacBook model. Located at the upper left corner of your screen, this macOS feature will show you the hardware and software information related to your laptop. It will display a product line such as “MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)”, which is the exact name of your MacBook as provided by Apple. Additionally, it may also tell you the processor type and speed, amount of built-in memory (RAM), storage size, serial number and current version of macOS installed.

To further ensure you have identified the exact model of your MacBook, use the System Information app located in the Applications folder on your hard drive. Once opened, click on System Report from the Overview list and then Hardware from within that menu. The touchscreen laptop or desktop model may be listed under Model Identifier along with even more detailed information about your device such as its serial number or processor type. This can help in finding compatible updates for later versions of MacOS or different kinds of accessories for that particular model.

Using terminal app

Terminal is an incredibly powerful tool for Mac users to access command line interfaces. This app can be used to gather a wealth of information about their system, such as the model name and serial number. To access Terminal, navigate to the Utilities folder within your Applications directory and locate the relevant application.

You can then enter a command like “system_profiler SPHardwareDataType” and press Return to see an overview of your Mac’s hardware, including its model name and serial number. One can access Terminal during the startup of a Mac through macOS Recovery by selecting it from the Utilities menu. If you still need help with using Terminal or any other issue related to your hardware, consider contacting an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional assistance.
